The Spanish and Chinese (and
others) make material for the garment industry out of rabbit skins.
They usually trim each skin to make a rectangle measuring 6" by 12" and
then sew 12 skins together to make a rectangular piece of material called
a "plate."
These plates are then used as trim on jackets, gloves, and other garments.
The plates can be made from natural white and natural mixed color skins
and can be dyed and further processed into unbelievable colors and
textures. Please see pictures below.
Our Spanish plates are the highest quality
plates in the world without question. They are used by the fashion industry in France and Italy and
for garment production in Europe, the USA, China, South Korea, and Taiwan.
The Spanish make fake
dozens of imitation skins from rabbits, including leopard, mink, ocelot,
cheetah, guinea pig, hamster, astrakhan, zebra, snake, tiger, jaguar,
black rectangles on white (rain), blue jeans, etc. They also make wild colors and process the
skins into "sheared," "snow top," and other styles.
The size of the plates varies somewhat from
plate to plate and from country to country. Recent measurements of
some plates at random are as follows: 45.75" by 24", 45.75" by 23.75", and 46" by 24". These measurements were made on the hide
side of the skin. The plates will appear to be a bit bigger on the
fur side.
The hair on the long hair plates are 1.25” to 1.5” long. The hair on the sheared plates are 18 mm or 0.7" long.
In the Native American
trade these plates are often referred to as "rabbit blankets." |

Long Hair Moroccan Plates:Craft:Natural Colors
The craft grade rabbit plates from Morocco have shorter hair and skins may not fully match. The hair is 0.75" to 1" long and the fur density is comparable to the Spanish plates. See pictures of the natural craft rabbit plates below.
Long Hair Moroccan Plates:Grade 3:Natural and Dyed Colors
The grade 3 rabbit plates are very nice. They are typically made from full skins with good hair quality. They generally do not have any sewing on the back. The hair is thicker and denser than the grade 4 rabbit plates. The hair is approximately 1" long. They range in size from 45.5" to 48.5" long to 22" to 24.5" wide and weigh about 0.7 to 1 pound. The grade 4 rabbit plates have weaker hair coverage than the grade 3 plates. They are generally made from full skins with some minor sewing on the back. The repairs are not typically visible on the hair side. These plates are not made from pieces or scrap. They are ideal for use as lining or general craft projects that do not require dense hair. Long Hair Moroccan Patchwork Plates:Natural Colors
These patchwork plates are made from the leftover pieces of #1 grade
rabbit skins used to make rabbit plates. The scrap is cut into small
rectangles measuring 5 cm by 10 cm (~2" by 4") and are sewn together to create
these 60 cm by 120 cm (~23.5" by 47") patchwork plates. See pictures of these rabbit plates below.

These are #1 grade dyed rabbit plates. These double-face plates give you two looks: the luxurious fur look on one hand, and the rugged leather look in another. The plates we have come with thicker skins on the fur side, while the Napa finish gives a very soft and smooth leather side. Their sizes may vary from plate to plate. They measure approximately from 24" to 27" in length, 48' to 51" in width, and weighing around 0.84 to 0.88 lbs.
The style 1 plates are thin and pliable, more softer and as smooth as the style 2 - ideal for lining jewelry boxes, purses, shoes and garment making.
The style 2 plates have a vinyl-like thickness to the backing - shinier than style 1, and more smooth than soft - ideal for sewing crafts and upholstery.
