The essence of the sweetgrass fragrance is extracted from fresh sweetgrass in a process
that creates what is called a hydrosol. This is the aroma of
the sweetgrass that has been steamed out of the sweetgrass and
then collected with pure distilled water. It is then placed in
a mister for use in ceremonies or packed in a bulk bottle for sacred
use or aromatherapy.
The sweetgrass hydrosol can be misted
into the air as a liquid smudge where the burning of sweetgrass
braids is not allowed—such as in hospitals or other public places
where smoking is not permitted. It can also be used as a
deodorizer in homes and cars. The 1-liter bottle can be mixed
with cleaners to purify rooms or can be added to small fountains for
a fresh, natural scent.
